District 7 On-The-Spot Contests

The District 7 Florida Scholastic Press Association invites all publications the ability to enter on-the-spot contests. Please make note that the contests are limited to ONE STUDENT per category.

Students must be PRE-REGISTERED to participate. Deadline for registration is October 24.

ON-THE-SPOT Contests:

OTS “Selfie” (OPEN TO ANYONE)  

Each publication can have one student compete. Submit a single instagram image and use the following hashtags when submitting (#fspaselfie17, #fspadistrict7 & #(ContestCode) (Example: #fspaselfie17, #fspadistrict7, #SS10) INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT MUST BE SET TO PUBLIC. The image must be captured on your mobile device. You must have WIFI or Data Capabilities for this contest. (cell phone, tablet). Your picture must prove that it was captured within the time frame of the contest. The selfie must also be captioned. Judges will look for effective composition, high technical quality, creativity/originality, human interest and an image that tells a story. Time Length: 1½ hour. Prompt will be provided.

 

OTS Illustration (OPEN TO ANYONE)

Submit a hand-drawn illustration that would be suitable to accompany an editorial cartoon based on the information of the keynote speaker’s presentation.  Each publication can have one student compete. Students should bring pens, paper, anything they need for the illustration. Time Length: 1½ hour.

 

OTS News Writing (OPEN TO NEWSPAPER ONLY)

Each newspaper publication can have one student compete. The students will listen to the keynote speaker during the opening session. The students will write a news story based on the keynote speaker’s presentation. Students should bring pens, white, lined paper and may also consider bringing a dictionary, thesaurus and/or stylebook (hard copy only). Time Length: ½ hour Q&A session with speaker after opening ceremonies. 1 hour to write the story. Total running time for contest 1½ hr.

 

OTS Editorial Writing (NEWSPAPER ONLY)

Each newspaper publication can have one student compete. Students will be given a prompt for an editorial writing assignment and must prepare an editorial. Students should bring pens, white, lined paper and may also consider bringing a dictionary, thesaurus and/or stylebook (hard copy only). Time Length: 1½ hr.

 

OTS Poetry (OPEN TO LIT MAG ONLY)

Each literary magazine publication can have one student compete. Students will be given a photograph or a piece of artwork and will write a poem based on that image. Students should bring pens, white, lined paper and may also consider bringing a dictionary, thesaurus and/or stylebook (hard copy only). Time Length: 1½ hour.  

 

OTS 100 Word Photo Story (OPEN TO LIT MAG ONLY)

Each literary magazine publication can have one student compete. Students will be given a photograph or a piece of artwork and will write a 100 word story based on that image. Students should bring pens, white, lined paper and may also consider bringing a dictionary, thesaurus and/or stylebook (hard copy only). Time Length: 1½ hour.  

 

OTS Feature Writing (YEARBOOK ONLY)

Each yearbook publication can have one student compete. Students will be given a prompt for a yearbook feature writing assignment and must prepare a feature story. Students should bring pens, white, lined paper and may also consider bringing a dictionary, thesaurus and/or stylebook (hard copy only). Time Length: 1½ hr.

 

OTS Caption Writing (YEARBOOK ONLY)

Each yearbook publication can have one student compete. Students will be given a series of photos and information for a yearbook caption writing assignment and must prepare captions. Students should bring pens, white, lined paper and may also consider bringing a dictionary, thesaurus and/or stylebook (hard copy only). Time Length: 1½ hr.

 

OTS Man on the Street – (BROADCAST ONLY)

This team, of up to four, should include interactive stand-ups, interviews, background music and creative transitions while telling a story. No previously recorded material may be used. Any graphics/animation/music must adhere to copyright guidelines. 1:30 Max. ONLY THE CONTEST FILE SHOULD BE ON THE FLASH DRIVE THAT WILL BE TURNED IN (.mov file) FOR JUDGING. BE SURE TO LABEL YOUR USB DRIVE WITH YOUR CONTESTANT I.D. NUMBER.   PROMPT WILL BE PROVIDED. Time Length: 2 hr.

 

OTS BROADCAST Commentary: (BROADCAST ONLY)

This category covers televised editorial commentary segment that gives an opinion on a news event or an issue. The commentary in the editorial should reflect the opinion of the entire video staff, and should clearly identify as opinion or commentary. Each team of up to three students will shoot up to 60 second (MAX) commentary based on the PROMPT PROVIDED. ONLY THE CONTEST FILE SHOULD BE ON THE FLASH DRIVE THAT WILL BE TURNED IN  (.mov file) FOR JUDGING. BE SURE TO LABEL YOUR USB DRIVE WITH YOUR CONTESTANT I.D. NUMBER.  Time Length: 2 hr.

 

OTS LIVE TO TAPE: (BROADCAST ONLY)

FOR THIS CATEGORY YOU MUST HAVE A CELL PHONE, or a TABLET with WIFI, OR DATA capabilities.  Team of up to two students will shoot a 45 second (MAX) package straight from a mobile device. No EDITING will be permitted. Once completed, the live to tape will be submitted to youtube or vimeo and the link needs to be submitted to an email given in your instructions (Email time stamp is deadline submission time. Make sure you leave time for upload conversion). PROMPT WILL BE PROVIDED.
